Celebrate New Year’s Eve Safely

New Year’s Eve is one of the most exciting holidays of the year. People across the country look for the best parties and plan on spending the night celebrating with friends and family. What many people don’t consider is that their night can end in tragedy if they aren’t careful. It is estimated that approximately 95 million people will be on the road this holiday season. It is known that more people are likely to drink and drive on New Year’s Eve than on any other day of the year.

When you plan your New Year’s Eve, you do so with the hopes of having a good time and getting home safely. For many people, this is exactly what happens. Unfortunately, for others, it is not how the evening turns out. Here are some tips to make sure that you are one of the people who ends their night safely.

1. Pace Yourself

If you’re going to be drinking alcohol, pace yourself. The faster you drink, the worse off you will be, both as far as your level of intoxication and your next-day hangover. A goal to set for yourself is no more than one drink per hour.

2. Mixing

If you want to avoid a terrible hangover, stick to clear alcohols and light liquors. The darker the beverage, the more toxins. The more toxins, the worse your hangover. If you are going to have mixed drinks, choose the ones that are made with fruit juice or water. Don’t drink beverages mixed with carbonated beverages.

3. Alternate

Follow every alcoholic drink with a glass of water. This will not only keep you from getting too intoxicated, but it will help to keep you hydrated. The more hydrated you are, the less severe your hangover will be the next day.

4. Eat and Snack

Eat a meal before you go out and snack while you are drinking. This will slow the absorption of alcohol into your system and prevent you from becoming too intoxicated too quickly. Look for foods that are high in protein like meat, cheese and nuts.

5. Don’t Drink and Drive

This tip should go without saying, but it is worth the reminder. Don’t get stuck looking for a ride when you are ready to go home. While you are making your plans for New Year’s Eve, remember to make plans for getting home. Whether you designate a driver, have someone on standby or even use Uber is up to you. No matter what you do, don’t drink and then get behind the wheel.
