How to Find the Best DUI Lawyer in Orlando

Getting a DUI charge can be scary, but having the right lawyer can make a big difference. Here are some tips to help you find the best DUI attorney in Orlando:

Check Their Credentials

Make sure the lawyer you’re considering is licensed in Florida and specializes in DUI cases. Further, don’t be fooled by a lawyer claiming to be a DUI specialist or Expert. Recent changes to the Florida Bar rules allow more attorneys to claim to be specialists or experts.  You should look for a lawyer who is board certified* as a DUI Defense Specialist. Yes, these lawyers will likely cost a little bit more, but now is not the time to bargain shop with your future on the line.

Attorneys with extra training or certifications in DUI defense are a plus, as they likely have a deeper understanding of these cases. Some lawyers may have attended specialized DUI defense seminars or courses, which can be an indicator of their commitment to staying current in their field. Also, look for memberships in professional organizations such as the National College for DUI Defense, as this reflects a dedication to excellence in DUI law.

Experience Is Key

A lawyer with lots of experience handling DUI cases will know the ins and outs of the court system, local judges, and prosecutors. Ask about their track record, including how many DUI cases they’ve handled and their success rate.

Experienced lawyers will have dealt with a variety of cases and situations, giving them a broader perspective on how to approach your case. They may also be familiar with the tactics used by the prosecution and know how to counter them effectively. Inquire about specific cases that are similar to yours and how they were resolved. This can give you a clearer idea of what to expect.

Meet with Them

Set up consultations with a few lawyers to discuss your case. Pay attention to their communication style, responsiveness, and whether they listen to your concerns. Choosing a lawyer you feel comfortable with is important, as you’ll be working closely together.

During these meetings, ask about their approach to handling DUI cases. Do they prefer to negotiate plea deals or take cases to trial? Understanding their strategy can help you determine if they’re the right fit for you. Additionally, observe how the attorney explains the potential outcomes of your case and whether they provide realistic expectations.

Understand the Fees

During your consultation, ask about the attorney’s fee structure. Some charge a flat fee, while others bill by the hour. Make sure you understand what’s included in the fee and any additional costs you might face. A clear and fair fee structure is important to avoid surprises. Also, inquire about payment plans or financing options if you need them. Knowing the full financial commitment upfront will help you make an informed decision. Ask if there are any potential additional expenses, such as expert witness fees, court costs, or administrative fees, so that you can budget accordingly.

Look at Their Reputation

Research the lawyer’s reputation in the legal community and among past clients. Positive reviews and testimonials can give you a good idea of their professionalism, expertise, and dedication. You can also check for any awards or recognitions they have received, which can be indicators of their standing in the legal community. An AV rating from Martindale Hubbell or being included in Super Lawyers are good indications of the attorney’s reputation.

Additionally, see if they have ever been sanctioned or faced disciplinary actions, as this could impact your decision. You can also reach out to other attorneys or legal professionals for their opinions about the lawyer’s capabilities and reputation.

Awards and Recognition

Once again, we must caution you here.  There are many companies out there that sell awards and recognition.  Be wary of lawyers who display the Top 10 DUI Lawyers, National Trial Lawyers, Lawyers of Distinction, Best of the Best, and many other awards, which are given to any lawyer who will pay the fee to join the organization.  While this practice is deceptive and likely a violation of the Rules of Professional Responsibility that lawyers operate under, looking at lawyers’ websites shows how widespread the false recognition and award problem is.

While there are legitimate organizations that research and recognize lawyers, such as Super Lawyers and Martindale Hubbel, most of the organizations that recognize lawyers as the best or in the top 50 are pay-for-play awards and are not based on merit.

Look for a Team Approach

Some law firms operate as attorneys on an individual basis, and others operate as a team.  When you hire a particular lawyer, you only get that lawyer’s experience and knowledge working for you.

When you hire an Orlando DUI defense law firm that operates as a team, you get multiple lawyers reviewing your file and sharing their ideas and experiences with each other to help you achieve the best possible outcome.

Local Knowledge Helps

A lawyer who knows Orlando’s court system, judges, and prosecutors can be a big advantage. They’ll have established relationships and a better understanding of the local legal scene. Local attorneys often know the tendencies and preferences of the judges and prosecutors, which can be useful in negotiations or trial settings. They may also be familiar with local resources and experts who can assist in building your defense. Ask the attorney if they have worked with specific judges or prosecutors in the past and how these relationships might benefit your case.

In short, finding the best DUI lawyer in Orlando means doing your homework, checking credentials, looking at experience, and making sure you feel comfortable with them. By following these tips, you can find a skilled lawyer who will effectively represent you and help you navigate your DUI case. Remember, the right attorney can provide invaluable guidance and support, greatly increasing your chances of a favorable outcome.
